Charles Adolphe Maucotel 1852
This instrument has a very strong and clear tone. Maucotel was a pupil of Vuillaume. Paul Tortelier owned a Maucotel cello which he often used while touring. Purchased in 1990 for $17,500 AUD and currently insured for $55,000, this instrument has held its value. It has a sound-post split, repaired at least forty years ago but perfectly fine, which significantly reduced its value, but not its tone quality. Maucotel was renowned for golden varnish, which this instrument clearly has. There has been doubt as to the head's originality, but the authenticity of the label has not been questioned.
